The Pendulum Swings Again

I'm going to try and ignore everything in my English major background that immediately equates all thing pendulum with this story , but a pendulum is just so exactly how I see this job-search situation. Good news/bad news. Good news/bad news. It's shifted position so many times these past four years that I can no longer invest a huge amount of emotional energy into it. Hence, I've depersonalized it into images of an enormous Dickensian clock, complete with a massive pendulum in the center that swings back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. Sometimes it gets stuck in one position or another, but it always swings back the other way.

Right now, though, we're on an upswing. Mr. Milkweed had a phone interview last week for a college job in VA that's very close to what he's doing right now-- not tenure-track, in other words-- but has quite a few other things going for it, including the slightest bump in prospective pay and a chance to take part time classes towards eventually earning his teaching certification (an option his current employer does not provide). Oh, and there's that whole proximity to family thing! Can't forget that. We should find out next week whether he's going to be invited to campus for a second interview.

There's a second part to this, too-- yesterday, he was invited to interview for a high school teaching position not far from where his parents live. He managed to schedule that for a day we'll be in NOVA with family anyway, so it worked out perfectly.

So there you have it. Two more chances. Promises of exactly nothing at all, but chances, nonetheless.

I do agree that it's best to try to depersonalize the job search, as so many elements of it will always be beyond your control, but I'm still glad to hear the good news. :-)
