Awful Library Books is a new blog that's fairly new, but has a lot of potential. It makes me wish I'd kept a particularly stunning specimen I once weeded at the library where I work-- a book for middle-schoolers called something like German Culture. All in all, it was pretty innocuous, except for the chapter near the end called "Reunification: Is It Possible?"
When I came across this in 2006, I knew for a fact that the nonfiction section had to have been weeded at least five times since 1990, but who knows? Maybe previous librarians just weren't so sure the whole thing would work out. I guess it was entirely possible that West Germany could have woken up one morning and decided that all that post-Soviet kitsch just wasn't cool anymore, and kicked East Germany to das kurb. After all, it all happened so fast! One day you're all excited for the opening of Steel Magnolias, and the next those crazy Europeans are bringing down a perfectly good wall...well, you just can't be too careful.
Better to hang on to it, just in case.
