This. Exactly This.

Stolen straight from Bite My Cookie:

As an aside, because this is not exactly a "Catholic" issue, per se: A few of you know that, while I'm not Catholic, many of the things about the church appeal to me-- particularly Mary. And lately, as I sometimes do every few years or so, I've been throwing around the idea of whether or not I could be Catholic. It's entirely possible this wouldn't be possible for me, doctrinally, because I'm just not down with the whole pro-life and papal infallibility things. Oh, and the refusal to ordain women? That's also not cool. (People assure me that many people who actually are Catholic don't subscribe to these and other teachings of the church, though, so the question of whether I could be Catholic or not is probably much more complex than this.)

But the idea that while being gay in and of itself is not a sin, acting on one's homosexual desires actually is? Um, no. No, absolutely not, no way, can't go there. I could never be a part of a church that could condemn anyone to a lifetime of tortured celibacy and guilt because of a biological predisposition.

There are those very close to me who maintain the "marriage is sacred exactly as it is, and it should not be messed with" stance. People I love, and whose opinions I respect. But on this we can never agree.

Prop 8 is shameful. It's been said many times before, but the struggle for gay rights is the Civil Rights movement of our time. I pray that we'll see a day when it would be unthinkable to even propose such a ballot measure, let alone pass it.

This is definitely the civil rights issue of our time. But I have always wondered why things that happen in California have such national attention. Okay, car emissions standards--I understand that: the car makers will have to make cars for California, who buys so many of them, and so everyone else's vehicles will have lower emissions. The Prop 8 thing wouldn't have the same effect: just because California legalizes marriage for same-sex couples *doesn't* mean that Oklahoma will now have to do the same. Does it? Am I missing something??

Though I sometimes find her super annoying, Maureen Dowd has won my respect with an extremely powerful and impressive column about "gay marriage" in today's New York Times (11/23). Have a read!
