Musical Music: Part III

(Just to be thorough: Part I and Part II.)

I know it's been a bit more quiet than usual around here. I can honestly say that's at least in part a reflection of the inner quiet I've been cultivating lately, but it's also indicative of dinner prep or cleaning the house while the kids are asleep. C'est la vie.

Speaking of French, today's selection is a piece by composer Erik Satie: Gnossienne No. 1.

Perhaps you adore classical music? Listen to it. Maybe you're indifferent? Listen to it. Perhaps you'd really rather soak your ears in lighter fluid and insert a flaming Q-tip than listen to anything that is, broadly described, part of the canon of art music produced or rooted in the traditions of Western liturgical and secular composition from the 11th century to the modern era? Just listen to it, friend.

It's three minutes of brief, spare piano artistry guaranteed to slow down whatever else is going on in your brain. Some people have described it as haunting, but I won't be doing that, because what does that really mean? Is it going to hide out in my attic and repeatedly impede my efforts to be a sane and contributing member of society? BOO!

Personally, I think it's lovely.

Playlist it under "Absinthe."

ML-Thanks for introducing me to this, I have been listening to it obsessively since you put it on your blog.

WOOOOO I'm so glad! This is just one of a series, and they're all lovely. Not being a student of music I'm not exactly sure what a "gnossienne" is, exactly, but Satie has at least four of them. If you like this one you'll definitely like the others, too.
